What is the Mentoring Program?

The Laurentian University Mentoring Program was implemented in the 2005-06 school year in order to assist students who, for two consecutive years, had a poor academic standing (generally described as failures in 9 credits or more). Certain other students who are deemed by the Registrar’s office to have experienced academic difficulties may also be recommended to the program.

Finally, the Senate Committee on Admissions, Promotions and Requests (APR) will occasionally refer students to the program as a condition to continued studies at Laurentian University.

The Program is administered by the Counselling and Support Programs office, situated in room L-210, R. D. Parker building, just past the Bookstore.

How does the Program work?

Students recommended to the program due to poor academic performance will receive a Laurentian University Mentoring Program Participation Agreement from the Registrar’s Office during the summer months following the completion of second year studies, or as part of a decision from the APR Committee.

Students who choose to participate in the Mentoring Program will benefit from the following:

  • A detailed career assessment and an interpretation involving two popular career assessment tools (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Strong Interest Inventory);
  • A personal interview to determine which strategies might be best suited to help each student achieve his/her academic goals;
  • Regular meetings with a Mentor (usually once weekly for a 15 to 30 minute session);
  • Monthly workshops on a variety of topics related to student success.

Laurentian University’s Mentoring Team:

The Counselling and Support Programs Office has 4 highlyqualified professional Counselors/Mentors on staff who are dedicated to this program and who provide the following program-related services to the participants:

  • Ongoing assistance, guidance and the provision of structure in helping students succeed academically;
  • Continuing support, encouragement and advice in keeping students focused on their studies and on track with respect to academic assignments and studies, so that the participants could eventually return to their original study programs on a full-time basis and free of probationary conditions.

We also try to determine if:

  • there are any learning disabilities which need to be identified and which require additional support, including the use of our assistive technologies;
  • there are any physical or psychological ailments which have impacted negatively on a student’s academic success and which need to be addressed;
  • there are any other factors (mild or severe in nature) that have affected a student’s success for which there are solutions that will help each participating student reach his or her full potential.

Note: Mentors essentially provide assistance and guidance, and do not review or help with classroom assignments which remain the major responsibility of all student participants; they also help students develop proper learning and study skills. In addition,

Mentors work closely with faculty members in ensuring that student participants follow the designated course outlines, submit assignments and essays on required due dates, and focus on adequate studying for the tests and exams that are part of a regular university course.

Program Success:

In the few years that the Mentoring Program has been in operation, we have witnessed a 70% to 85% success rate.

This means 70-85% of the students who would normally have been expelled from Laurentian University due to poor academicstanding or would have been placed on academic probation with no additional assistance, are now given the support and the opportunity to successfully complete their Laurentian University undergraduate degree.
